Colombian Emeralds in Delmora® Jewellery

“Some people believe that wearing an emerald brings wisdom, growth and patience. And as any couple would agree, all of these qualities are essential for lasting love. This may explain why the gift of an emerald is considered symbolic of love and devotion

Gavin Linsell. Guide to Gems and Jewellery.

Emeralds were formed more than 35 million years ago under unique pressure and temperature conditions with elements such as beryl. For over 4,000 years, they have been treasured as a symbol of eternal spring and immortality. Prized by Egyptians, Romans, Aztecs, and European crowned heads, they are an ancient gemstone with archaeological evidence of being marketed by the Babylonians as early as 4,000 BC.

It is believed to be Cleopatra’s favourite gem. Ancient Romans associated it with fertility and rebirth, dedicating it to Venus, their goddess of love and beauty.

 Jardines – Gardens

Emeralds often contain inclusions and tiny fractures. These are commonly called “jardines”. A jardin is not viewed as negative as it would be for some other gems. Instead, jardines are considered part of the emerald’s character and can be used to assure the purchaser that the emerald they are buying is a natural gemstone.

Although emeralds are relatively hard and durable, they must be protected from harsh blows because the Jardin within makes them susceptible to breaking. The “emerald cut” was developed specifically for this gem to reduce the pressure exerted during cutting.

4 Factors

There are four factors to recognise and value an emerald:

Colour: the green colour of the emerald is due to the presence of small amounts of chromium and vanadium. The most desired colour is bright, saturated green.

The cut refers to the way the emerald was carved. The cut, angles, and polish give the emerald more shine and sparkle.

Clarity: is the transparency of the gem. Gardens are perceived as beautiful, adding value and charm to the stone.

Weight is measured in carats, with 1 CT equal to 0.2 gr. A bigger size means a bigger value.

 Why Colombian Emeralds

Known for their vivid green colour, Colombian emeralds are usually of exceptional quality. According to tradition and lore, Colombia is the finest modern source of Emeralds, with the best mines in the Cundiboyacense highlands, such as Muzo, Chivor, Coscuez, Gachalá, La Pita, and Peñas Blancas.

As the founder of Delmora® is from Colombia, Emeralds were the obvious option to include in the portfolio of Delmora’s fine jewellery. The founder’s knowledge of the areas where the best-quality emeralds are found made it easier to find the right supplier.

Speaking the native language is also a big advantage, as it helps with negotiations and finding the best stones in the market.

Our emerald supplier is a Colombian business founded in 1954. They mainly supply emeralds from the Muzo mine, which are the most valuable due to their deep green colour. We have visited their headquarters multiple times in Bogota, Colombia, to ensure we get the best possible quality stones.

Every emerald comes with a certification of authenticity from the supplier. Every gem certificate has a consecutive number, origin, description, and weight of the stone.

GIA certificates will be provided for the most valuable stones (above £1,200). If you require a GIA certificate for Emeralds with a value under £1,200, there is an extra charge for the certification and there will need to be a small delay in delivery.

All our emeralds are certified by the supplier, so we are confident of their authenticity. We do not accept returns on emeralds to ensure that the stone we provide is 100% authentic.
